Back Tattoo
The body's biggest canvas.
The back is the body's largest, most symmetrical canvas — ideal for big Japanese, blackwork and realism projects. Pain is medium, more sensitive around the spine. It takes 2-5 sessions by size, and price is set by the design's detail.
Thinking about a back tattoo in Istanbul? The back is the largest, most symmetrical canvas an artist can work on — made for big, narrative compositions. At our studio in Beşiktaş, Istanbul we work with artists who specialise in large pieces: Japanese (Irezumi), blackwork, geometric and realism. Back projects usually need a design plus several sessions; we can start the first session today and build the rest on a plan.
Example Work

Sessions & process
A back tattoo isn't finished in one sitting; depending on size it runs across 2-5 sessions, with a few weeks of healing between them. We work out the exact session count and price at a free consultation, once we've seen the design and its level of detail.
Pain level
Apart from the spine and around the shoulder blades, the back is usually a medium-pain area; the broad, fleshy parts are more comfortable. Since sessions are long, we take breaks and never push too hard in a single day.
Full back or spine line?
Both use the back, but the scale differs. If you want a large, narrative, striking composition, a full back; if you want a fine, symmetrical, more delicate design, the spine line is for you.
Full back
- The largest, symmetrical canvas
- Large narrative compositions
- Usually 2-5 sessions
- Ideal for Japanese, blackwork, realism
Spine line
- A fine, vertical centre line
- Lettering and ornamental design
- Often a single session
- More delicate and minimal
